The ExVis System was developed at the Institute for Visualization and
Perception Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's
Computer Science Department. ExVis constructs iconographic data
visualizations from multidimensional datasets, and offers a highly
interactive user interface to permit the rapid selection of data
attributes and data mappings for display. ExVis is able to display up
to 15 distinct attributes simultaneously, using line-oriented,
color-field and sonic "icons". The visual icons are displayed en
masse - to create a visual texture that would conceivably exploit the
human visual systems' preattentive processes, such that trends and
patterns are readily distinuguished. Sound is also used as a
reinforcement, or as a channel for additional data parameters. This is
a much different approach than automated data mining, where algorithms
determine relationships and structure in data. ExVis is meant to be
used in an exploratory data analysis mode, where data can be rapidly
and easily manipulated, organized into perceptually compelling
displays, with flexibility for changing viewing parameters.
