ExBase (EXploration of DataBASEs)

ExBase is an integrated database - visualization system that enables the visual exploration of databases. It offers data selection capabilities native to allow the selection of data based on associations through a textual query interface to the database, and also through graphical tools at the visualization. ExBase can also monitor all user-data interactions, and construct a structured representation of the database exploration process. Because a database management system is available, all exploration session data can be stored for future analysis or exploitation. In light of the huge databases found in science and corporate America, knowing what data was explored will be crucial for the effective exploration and subsequent knowledge discovery of these vast data stores.

ExBase takes the approach that database support is necessary for database exploration, and this must be integrated with both algorithmic and visual analysis tools. Additionally, ExBase focuses on relational databases, which offer interesting visualization challenges that lend themselves to abstract, iconographic, multidimensional presentations. Relational database data often does not have a spatial component, and is often highly multidimensional. Such visualizations, again, are not prevalent in the mainstream, but extremely important to a large user population.
