AnVil Informatics Appoints Dr. Gregory Piatetsky-Shapiro to its Scientific Advisory Committee
Lowell, MA AnVil Informatics,
Inc. has announced the appointment of Gregory
Piatetsky-Shapiro, Ph.D. to its Scientific Advisory
Committee to guide AnVil's development as an in
silico drug discovery services company.
"Many people in the industry
call Gregory the father of data mining,"
said AnVil President and Chief Operating Officer,
Dr. Michael McManus. "His expertise in the
field of data mining is unquestioned in the industry
and we are confident that he will be a valuable
advisor to help guide AnVil's scientific and technical
direction. He not only has a deep knowledge of
the industry, but also of data mining methods,
both current and cutting-edge, and he is well
versed in all aspects of the data mining profession.

Dr. Piatetsky-Shapiro is the Editor of KDnuggetsTM
News, the leading online newsletter for the data
mining and knowledge discovery community. He was
a founding co-editor in chief of the Data Mining
and Knowledge Discovery journal, and is currently
on the editorial board of the journal.
Dr. Piatetsky-Shapiro was
Vice-President and Chief Scientist at Xchange,
a leading analytical CRM and campaign management
company, as well as Vice-President and Chief Scientist
at Knowledge Stream Partners (KSP), a consulting
and software development company that specialized
in advanced data mining and customer analytics.
Prior to that, he served for 12 years as Senior
and later Principal Member of Technical Staff
at GTE Laboratories.
He has edited or co-edited
eight collections on data mining and knowledge
discovery, including two best-selling books: Knowledge
Discovery in Databases and Advances in Knowledge
Discovery in Databases, and has over 50 publications
in the areas of data mining, artificial intelligence
and database research.
Dr. Piatetsky-Shapiro earned his M.S. and Ph.D.
from New York University Department of Computer
Science. In 2001 he was elected as a Director
of ACM SIGKDD, the leading professional organization
for Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, and he
received the first SIGKDD Service Award for his
contributions to the Data Mining and Knowledge
Discovery community. He is also on the Steering
Committee of IEEE International Conference on
Data Mining, a leading international forum for
data mining research.
