Dr. Grosse has a diverse scientific background-from physics to molecular biology and
genetics, from statistics to electronics and mechanics. He has taught various
college-level courses in math, physics and bioinformatics. Dr. Grosse received his Ph.D
in physics with specialization in Biophysics from Boston University and his B.S. in Physics
with honors from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. His graduate work was done
in Dr. Eugene Stanley and Dr. Sergey Buldyrev's group focusing on DNA sequence
analysis - search for universal statistical patterns that are different in coding and
noncoding DNA in all organisms, regardless of their phylogenetic origin.
For the past five years, bioinformatics has been the focus of Dr. Grosse's research. He
has completed several exciting projects in leading bioinformatics groups, such as:
- Development of gene recognition program GRAIL at Oak Ridge National Lab;
- DNA and protein sequence analysis at Humboldt University;
- Prediction of the structural and functional classes of proteins using data mining
and visualization techniques for Pfizer Research Lab;
- Development of species-independent gene recognition program at Free University in
Berlin, Germany.
